Chemical Peel (Glycolic 40%)

Botox Wimbledon

A chemical peel is used to treat wrinkles, discoloured skin and scars, usually on the face. Fine lines and wrinkles, signs of aging, are reduced — revealing youthful, healthier skin.

The peel involves a chemical solution applied to skin to remove the top layers. The skin that grows back is smoother. With a light or medium peel, you may need to undergo the procedure more than once to get the desired results.

The 40% Glycolic Acid Peel is generally considered a medium peel. The depth of this peel is determined by the number of layers applied — and the skin’s tolerance. For new users, 1-3 layers are advised; 4-6 layers will result in a medium peel.

Benefits of a chemical peel:

  • Provides a very even exfoliation, increasing skin cell turnover
  • Reveals healthier cells on the skin’s surface
  • Reduces fine lines and signs of premature aging by
  • Acne and other scars are reduced with consistent glycolic acid treatment

Make sure your healthcare provider is experienced, to ensure the best results and avoid complications.

What you can expect

Before the procedure, your doctor will clean your face, protect your hair, and cover your eyes with ointment, gauze, tape or goggles. Pain relief isn’t typically needed for a light chemical peel. If you’re having a medium peel, you might receive a sedative and painkiller.

Your doctor will use a brush, cotton ball, gauze or sponge to apply a chemical solution typically containing glycolic acid or salicylic acid. The treated skin will begin to whiten. You might feel mild stinging while the chemical solution is on your skin. Your doctor will apply a neutralizing solution or wash to remove the chemical solution from the treated skin.

After the procedure

Afterward, your skin will be red, tight, irritated or swollen. You must protect skin from the sun, moisturise and apply protective ointments to your skin. Use ice packs for comfort. Over-the-counter pain-relieving medication may help reduce any discomfort.

With a chemical peel, you’ll improve skin texture and tone — and reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles. While the results are subtle, they will increase with repeated treatments. You may want touch-ups as over time, to help with new lines and skin colour changes.
