Crowns

If you need help strengthening a tooth, then we often use a dental crown to fit over the remaining part. This makes your tooth look like a whole, natural one once more. Modern crowns are much less bulky than older ones, making them feel more natural, and they also do not have the old-fashioned metal edge at the gumline.

We may recommend a crown for you for various reasons. Your tooth may be very decayed and not strong enough to be filled any more, the top part of the tooth may have been accidentally damaged, or you may need one following root canal treatment. Crowns are also sometimes needed to help support a dental bridge.

We prepare the tooth in the first instance after first numbing it and the surrounding area with local anesthetic. We then take an impression, or mould, of the area around your tooth which will be used by a skilled dental technician to craft your crown so that it is a perfect fit. The technician will also ensure the colour of the crown matches your own teeth, so that it is virtually indistinguishable from them. We use different types of crowns to ensure the best aesthetic look without losing function.

For the couple of weeks while the crown is being made, you will be fitted with a temporary one. Once your new crown is ready, we will fit it and bond it in place with a special dental cement.
